A Handy Calculator for Diabetics
Simplifying Insulin Dosage and Carb Tracking
Living with diabetes can be a challenging journey, especially for those who are new to managing the condition. Calculating insulin dosages, keeping track of carbs, and maintaining glucose levels has been a daunting task for me. I can’t imagine having to do it for one of my kids. I am currently so dependent on my pump/CGM combo, that if they ever fail me, I would not know how to calculate my insulin dosage. That is scary.
Thanks to the ingenuity of individuals like Brian, there are resources available to make this process more manageable.
Brian’s story
In July 2022, Brian’s family experienced a life-changing event when his son, Teddy, was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes (T1D). To manage this condition, he developed a T1D Calculator, initially as a personal tool. The calculator, created using Airtable, helped him and his wife keep track of the carbohydrates in Teddy’s meals, insulin-to-carb ratios, insulin-to-blood glucose corrections, and detailed meal records. Additionally, the tool was used to monitor prescriptions and supplies, sending notifications when supplies were running low or expiring. After a year of using it, Brian decided to share this valuable resource with others, providing a demo, an opportunity to duplicate the Airtable base, and emphasizing the importance of consulting a medical professional for healthcare decisions.
